WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture means a form of Primary Health Care, based on traditional Chinese medical concepts and modern oriental medical techniques, that employs acupuncture diagnosis and treatment, as well as adjunctive therapies and diagnostic techniques, for the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health and the prevention of disease. Acupuncture shall include, but not be limited to, the insertion of acupuncture needles and the application of moxibustion to specific areas of the human body and the use of electroacupuncture, Qi Gong, oriental massage, herbal therapy, dietary guidelines, and other adjunctive therapies, as defined by board rule. INFO ABOUT TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM)
TCM has been around for over 2,500 years and is considered the oldest practiced medical system on the face of the earth. As practitioner, I am beyond grateful to be part of the oldest medical system on planet.
The power of this medicine is still an enigma to most western doctors. However, many of the achievements in our allopathic medicine are due to the TCM.
In Florida most people are only familiar with acupuncture, which is one of the modalities in Oriental Medicine.
Doctors of Oriental Medicine can treat conditions from variety of diseases with complex characters. They received training in Western diagnoses, Chinese diagnoses and how to treat internal diseases.
DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM A DOCTOR TO COME TO ACUPUNCTURE?
No. In the state of Florida, you do not need a referral from a medical doctor in order to receive acupuncture or herbal prescription. By all means, we do not replace your medical doctor, and we strongly encourage you to follow your medical doctor advises for your conditions.
HOW LONG IS A TREATMENT?
An initial visit treatment is about 60-90 minutes. This visit includes a detailed intake, treatment planning, and acupuncture treatment. Follow up visit takes 45-60 minutes.
IS ACUPUNCTURE PAINFUL?
Many people will think of hypodermic needles when think about acupuncture needles. Hypdermic needles hurt because they slice the skin when enter while acupuncture needles called filiform needles do not slice the skin but simply penetrate and will only feel little pinch or some people describe it as mosquito bite (DOES NOT HURT).
You may feel heavy, dull, ache, or warm sensation, it is normal. Most patients report acupuncture needles do not hurt.
IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
Acupuncture is considered a minimally invasive procedure and is considering safe. While there are some risks, typically for most people, the benefits outweigh the risks. Minimal risks of acupuncture include: bruising, numbness, tingling, pin point bleeding at the site of insertion, dizziness or fainting (especially if have not eaten).
More severe and unusual risks of acupuncture include nerve damage, organ puncture, or infection. Single use of sterile needles is used in order to prevent infection.
Extremely important to tell your acupuncturist if you are or suspect to be pregnant. Most likely your treatment protocol will be changed.
CAN MY CHILD BE TREATED WITH ACUPUNCTURE?
Yes. Acupuncture treatment uses same protocol just as adults. Unfortunately, in many cases children are afraid of needles so many children are treated with different approaches like homeopathic or herbal medicine.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
The number of treatments is difficult to predict due to patient condition and recovery process. Some patients respond quicker than others. Depends on the severity of the condition.
Chronic conditions can be long turn treatments and in some patients treatments may apply for the rest of the life in order to maintain quality and reduction of their discomfort from their condition.
Normally, most patients can tell after their 3-4 treatments if getting any benefits and can decide whether to continue treatments.
DO I HAVE TO BE ILL TO RECEIVE TREATMENT?
No! This is the beauty of Chinese Medicine because it can be used for prevention of disease as well. Our body constantly is need of tonification due to current life style and environment we live.
HOW ARE CHINESE HERBS / FORMULA ARE APPLIED?
Patients can take single herbs or a formula can be made based on their conditions. Most formulas are with proven research and have been for long time. Some Chinese formulas go back 200BC when first used.
Most of herbs are prescribed in a formula. There are different forms of administration of Chinese herbs such as raw herbs, granules and pill form.
Raw herbs need to be cooked in a water decoction and then strained and the water is consumed.
Granules are consumed as a tea. They are a concentrated powder form of herbs, which are scooped into water and stirred to dissolve.
Prepared products are usually taken as pills; however, other prepared products may be used topically in the form of tinctures or liniments.
